Make sure you take the highest level math classes possible. Also take a physics course. and take only good classes
It highly depends on where you are living, and what sort of schooling is available in your area. For example if my country we usually don’t have a choice at the high school level. Every one, almost, takes up a mathematics course in high school. Its after that the choices are available. To be a mechanical engineer, mechanical engineering study would of course start when you enroll yourself in a engineering university, but its your aptitude that should guide you before that. You should follow such a course of education such that you are eligible for that dream university. At high school level choose Maths, Physics, Chemistry definitely if you have a choice !
What i taken that has given me the most help is computer programming classes. you have to take some programming classes in college, but you use it more just doing algorithms by hand. Also autocad and calculus, physics, chemistry. take AP credits b/c it really doesnt matter if you get a C or something in HS, but you will avoid getting a C in college which really hurts your GPA b/c theyre usually 4 hr classes (because you will already get credit)
Math, Math, Math Theory, Science ,computers, and I would also suggest some good english classes, communication classes and business fundamentals. While the main job of the mechanical engineer is to design and build systems that do useful work, you have to understand and be able to explain to those that are non technical and are paying the tab. those other classes will help with that.
